The blankets sold by Mary Coleman are great. They are absolutely
waterproof (not just "resistant") with a nice lining so they are very
warm & windproof also. Mary's #814-448-2821 or write HCR-02 Box 6,
Cassville,
PA 16623. Cost: $65 + shipping. Many colors. Size 72 fits most Arabs,
larger Arab (15.1-15.2H) need a 74. You can custom order with longer
sides if your horse has an extra large barrel or you want the blanket to
cover down the sides when placed atop your saddle. Made by the Amish in
Central PA. Good price--not "fitted" with darts on the rump--but stay in
place quite well (no leg straps). Great blanket for the price (we own
3!)--and they last.
Mary also sells rump rugs made of the same material. I sell Teddy's
version which stays in place, rolls up small, is wind/waterproof with a
flannel lining ($40+ship--great colors too).

We also got a "raincoat" from Dover that's just a plastic-type sheet that
has a band to fit over the ears and extends like a large rug over the
entire body. OK for when you've saddled up & are just waiting to mount.
If you really read the fine print on raingear for horses, most will say
water repellent--big whoop--doesn't last two minutes in a downpour.
Goretex is available but you'd better be wearing your heart monitor when
you glance at the price.

If you REALLY want to save $$, don't throw away those old shower
curtains. I know everybody converts those old blankets for other uses,
shower curtains can work just as well! Surcingles are available most
everywhere.

It must be raining everywhere today....
