[endurance] How much grain?

Hi all,

This will be Mystery's 3rd summer of working and training and I
think he has great potential to get into prime shape. He is half
Arab / Half Morgan (Morab), tall and muscled up nicely this summer. He
eats extremely healthy grass on hilly pasture, 40 acres and 8 friends,
and I am a weekend rider with him. He eats alfalpa when needed during
the weekends (ie: in training) and in spring I'll work with him one day
mid week.

I'd like to give him grain as a treat and possibly help him
develope muscles when we start again, but I am very afraid of over
graining him or making him too hot. Also I don't know how healthy it
is to just give him a little grain on the weekends and not during the
week. What about a grain treat the night before a long ride. We were
doing average 15 miles every weekend until a few weeks ago when the
rain started. I see him both days but one is easier then the other.

So any grain (oats) would be as an extra. How much could I give? I do
not want to chance him colicing or inadvertantly hurt him.

Thank you all for your thoughts on Susan, my cousin who died and
thank you for the diversity and good advise of this mailing.
