Years ago when I first started endurance riding, Bev Tibbits told me that
horses will hit plateaus. Their pulse rates won't go down as much as you
think they should for the condition they are in. She told me to lay off for
a few weeks and watch how the pulse drops under similiar training conditions.
Well, it worked. My morgan improved markedly by simply laying off awhile.
This was a horse that was already in good condition but I knew the pulse
rate didn't correspond to the performance he was giving. This was over
twenty years ago when there were no heart monitors and we just jumped off and
took 15 second pulses. So I don't have any numbers on hand. I just remember
how flabbergasted I was when laying off, paid off.
