Hi there, I work for an equine veterinarian who occasionally has prescribed
Regumate to mares for the reason(s) you indicated. I do not know about
withdrawal prior to races, but at the regional endurance conference I went
to a week ago, the 2 DVMs there who were speaking said that for *most*
drugs, a 24 hour "pull" prior to competition is sufficient.
Additionally, you might ask your veterinarian if he/she has familiarity with
using a human hormone called Medroxyprogesterone to settle the mare down. My
doctor read about it over a Compuserve equine DVM newsgroup and he has just
prescribed it to his first patient. The dose that was suggested (but again,
please, please, please talk to your doctor before trying *anything*!!) is
40mg (comes in a 10mg tablet) once daily. If it works, it will be MUCH more
economical than Regumate.
Good Luck!
