First of all, thank you for the info. Where do I complain??

Don't take this personally, it's not directed at you, but they expect us to
PAY to get our horse's pedigrees? Isn't that kind of stupid? And it sounds
like an archaic system to boot. Luckily, I can go over and look in stud book
at school--they for some reason have a very old set and I know how
expensive those were! I enjoy doing pedigree research, and I know there are
people who try to and probably do make money at it, but I don't think I
agree with this. HOw did THEY come by all their research materials? I used
to dig around in the AHWs in the early 80's and surprisingly, I got my
gelding's pedigree back to 14 generations. It took until last year (he is
now 23) to get the two bottom lines on him--I discovered that he was realted
to a famous US Cavalry ENdurance horse-- El Sabok. At any rate, it was
always a thorn in my side to have to PAY to do pedigrees. HOw would you
like to pay money to find out geneology on you?? NO offense intended, I just
don't see how I can be expected to pay to IMPROVE the breed by making sure
my horses will mix well and we aren't breeding garbage.

The TB people have pedigrees on line-at least I found one place that will
add your horse to it-there are SO many TBs around. I think it's about time
the Arab industry stops hiding their pedigrees and makes them available to
everyone on line. HEck, I would volunteer to punch in the names myself!
ANd yes, I know there are over 500,000 animals.

What is so insecure about it?? I enjoy looking stuff up, and read only DBs
can't be changed (supposedly). WHat are they trying to secure??
I was working on an equine database at the vet school, and we were going to
put files on CDs so that all vet schools could have access to them. It got
cost prohibitive, and I didn't have enough people to help input data, so it
was never finished... HOwever, almost ANYONE could have read the files. I
would have probably just made the demographics (owners/addresses etc)
private on an as needed basis.
Who do we write to? I have problems with the Registry besides this- I don't
think they are helping us keep the breed intact and they certainly don't
care that the older rarer ones get any notice. It takes publications like
the Crabbet Influence to find out that there are older bred horses still out
there that people would love to preserve!! Am I the only one with this
problem?
THey also don't seem to realize that people like me don't HAVE tons of money
(yet) to do everything possible to preserve and find out all we can.

I guess I better get off my soapbox, and yes I am expecting comments and/or
flames.
