[endurance] Chewing wood

I have been reading the thread about horses who chew, and the idea that
occupying them with something else, like a rubber ball, will help.

Perhaps this is true, but I also think that they chew wood because it has
something in it that they like. Nutritionally. I know a woman who observed
wild and feral horses. She said that they eat wood, woody stems, leaves,
berries, etc. I have observed my horses doing the same thing. Not poisonous
stuff, but things like blackberries, cascara, dandelions and wild carrots.
And wood. My grey arab used to eat dirt, so I think that there are things
that they instinctively know to find in available sources. There most be a
lot minerals in the dirt, and he only would go for one spot.

So I got one of those free choice stress systems from ABC and put it where
they could share. They sampled everything in it, and used up all of most of
it, except the detox. Like I suspected, Ali stopped eating dirt, and they
chewed a lot less too.

I really think they are smarter than us, being closer to their instincts than
we are!!!
