Before you do anything drastic first consider the persoanlity of your
horse. Horses are herding animals and their preception of their place in
the herd has a lot to do with the type of training you need to employ. The
approach required for a "lead mare" type (alpha mare) is different than
that required for a young excitable gelding.

Lots of riding and time for the horse to gain diverse experiences is pretty
much the answer. With an alpha mare, my experience is that riding is
pretty much a negotiation.
