There are many areas where endurance riders ride where there is not
cellular coverage. If you ride more than about 10 miles from a cellular
tower or can't line of sight to a cellular tower your will not be able to
close the link so your phone will be worthless. There are some space based
cellular systems coming on line but they are currently very expensive if
available at all.

The best solution is to ride in three's. One person to stay with the
injured person and one to go get help. A good working knowledge of first
aid along with some first aid supplies is also reccomended.
