[endurance] Cellular Safety

As I was driving home from the barn yesterday I
heard a KCBS news story about a rider whose horse
fell backwards into a creek. Thank goodness there
was a second rider who had a cellular phone and
called for help -- litterally. The horse is OK
and the rider was airlifted out to a local hospital.
The rider had some back pain.

I've been toying with the idea of carrying a phone
just for this reason (and on my person, not in the
saddlebag... else the phone would gallop home with my
not-related-to-Lassie horse). But it never occured
to me that EACH rider should perhaps carry one.
Good thing the "only" phone didn't end up in
the creek!

Does anyone know these people? Is the rider going
to be OK in the long run? Apparently they were
fairly far out on a long ride so I thought this
might be endurance people.

ps... with a happy ending maybe this will end up
on Rescue 911... :)
