The disease called strangles is generally caused by an infection with one
of the Strep. bacteria. The most common cause is Strep. Equi, another
similar strep that can cause similar symptoms is Strep. zooepidemicus I
believe there is another strep that can cause strangles as well. The
disease is generally not that serious in young horses but can cause death
in older ones. The symptoms include snotty nose, enlarged glands in the
neck and fever. The treatment consists of supportive therapy (warmth and
easy to chew food) and antibiotics. It if very contagious and is both air
and soil borne according to my information. I do not know how far away
you have to be to avoid it. IMO I'd get my horses vaccinated ASAP instead
of worrying about the problem of isolation.

>Also, is there any vaccine to prevent Strangles?

Yes there are several manufacturers of the Strep vaccine. In the past
there was a problem with bad reactions from the early vaccines but I
haven't had a bad reaction and I give it routinely to all of our horses
every year. We use the version manufactured by Foprt Dodge that is only
for strep equi.
