Well I can see there is a lot of discussion that the fees are too high
but IMO I think they are fairly reasonable.

AERC does not charge for keeping track of my mileage, I don't have to
nominate a horse with them and I get a listing of the rides in my area
with the magazine.

That is only for non- sanctioned members. If you want to participate in
shows and collect points you must have the full membership. One way they
keep costs lower is to have business memberships and lifetime
memberships. Those larger fees as well as yearly or lifetime horse
recording fees etc. all help offset their individual member fees.

IAHA charges $35 for each person. Most local clubs then add theri own
dues on top of that.

USDF requires yearly dues.

I pay dues to the California Dressage Society and the local San Diego
chapter.

NATRC has yearly or lifetime dues plus each region has local dues.

Horse sports can be expensive but I don't find the fee structure that
onerous.
