let me know if this does or doesn't go through? Thanks!

Sigh... wish I could train Tevis candidates for a living!!! ;^)

Has anyone been able to get results from
"http://www.endurance.com/tevis/1995.htm"?

I keep getting errors and would like to know if I've got a screwed up
system or the results haven't been posted yet.

Thanks

I just tried the Tevis www page too, and assume that they haven't got
the story typed in yet. The "1995.htm" page doesn't seem to exist.

Maybe Linda should just send 'em her post? Bet Steph gets that on OUR
E-page first! :-)

In order to make it easier for the world Famous Austrailain Graham
Jenkins to meet up with several Bay Area E-Lers I'm booking the Lake
Sonoma ride. Now I've some questions some of you from that division might
be able to answer. What's it like??? I've heard it's a big ride. So I'd
be interested in how y'all would rate it for difficulty etc. Rebel was a
50 mile horse before his second suspensory tear over a year ago and his
condition is far better then a training ride horse, but I don't want to
inflict a real tough 50 on him.

They ain't posted yet. I've had correspondence with The Endurance
Connection. They told me they haven't had time to post them yet. <sigh> I
wanted to call Kristan and surprise her by already knowing, but alas I
had to call her boyfriend to find out she finished 12th. Seems she helped
a dizzy rider who was vomiting on the leg in from Franciso's. What a girl.

Ohhhhh Cooooool! Do you remember Graham from his rec-eq days???? I have a
quarter horse sized blue ww trailer and a 93 white suburban. I think I'm
going to drape it in a 10 ft Texas State flag so everybody can find us. <G>

Who knows about these gremlins. Stuff I've posted to E-L never makes it
and then when I post to endurance two copies show up with different times
in the headers. Strange.

Oh did I mention on that Lake Sonoma ride Jan Martel is going to drive
over from Davis and ride it on Diag her WB? Should turn some heads. Maybe
I'll end up riding the TB. Flossie's 16'3. She might scare some horses
meant for this. <VBG> I haven't really tested Rebel's suspensory yet.
We've just used him for a schooling horse. Maybe I'll come up and do the
25 at Las Trampas first just to see what happens. You know
Hearldsburg-Sebastapuddle-Geyersville loop can be pretty wet in October.
:) I dunno. I worry about him. I've broken that same suspensory twice.
Meanwhile Kristan finsishes 12th at Tevis after stopping on the California
Loop to help a vomiting rider. We used to train together, were neck and
neck and now I'm jealous. Way jealous. My only attempt resulted in getting
pulled at Francisco's. <sigh> Well I'm gonna get by that. Green doesn't
look good on me. ;-)

Hi.

I have posted a few thing here in the recent past, and have been avdily
reading all the news that goes by. I have some comments that have been
hanging heavily on my heart that I would like to share with you.

I understand how excited most people are about the internet and the
availability of information, the ability to interact with other people and to
toss ideas around. But please let us not forget that for the moment, the
internet is a very elite medium: Available only to those with the knowledge,
the funds and the inclination to get online.

Those members of our national and international horse groups, i.e. AERC, FEI,
the ECTRAS, etc. have a responsibilty **only** to get their information from
the printed sources that come with the memberships that they pay for
annually. Members of those groups have no responsibility to acquire the
information that is here on this homepage, or wandering around other regions
of the internet. Until it is printed in the newsletters, it is seen only by
us, and we are a vary small group.

Please, let it become our responsibility to disperse the info we get here to
those not as *fortunate* as we. I hope to hear as many conversations between
internet people and non internet people at the rides that I go to, as I read
interactions here. I am afraid that we are going to start making decisions
and then start them into action as a small group, before remembering that we
represent only a small part of a much bigger group.

I hope that this makes sense. It is just an observation, and is meant to
point fingers at no one. It is something that I am seeing all over as a
result of the emergence of this medium, and I felt that it was time to post
this.

Thanks
for your time,

Eliza Drummond aka Arapaloosa@aol.com

Subject: Skyhorse Saddle for sale

Teresa McHugh of the Pacific Northwest is selling her skyhorse. It has the
newer, longer booties and is complete and in good shape. I have test ridden
it. Everything is there. She has a fleece pad to cover the seat with. I am
not sure if that is in the package or not, but it does help the comfort of
the ride.

Price: $650.

Desiree,

Congrats for the digest of all the policies we have here in
continental Europe.

Don't you think the heart and in fact the pulse rate
have too much impact ?

I would like te emphasize that Endurance must be SIMPLE and that
a VET must say OK to REstart, not only the measure and the policy !
Pierre.

Subject: On the Road

A friend of mine is considering hauling out in October for the "On the Road
to the Championship" ride in Kansas. Does anyone have any info on what the
trail is like? Climbs, footing, hold areas, water, all the normal stuff. Being
from the East Coast we are not familiar with the terrain out there. Any
input would be greatly appreciated.

First, I want to congratulate Matthew and Fred on their
Tevis win. To win both the Old Dominion and the Tevis in
the same year is amazing and I suspect unprecedented.
This Spring at the Biltmore ride, I saw Matthew jump up
and click his heels at a vet check and announce, "not
bad for an old man!" I agree.

This past Saturday, the first 100 mile ride was held at
the Crooked Creek Horse Park, north of Pittsburgh, PA.
This is the site of the 1997 ROC and is an outstanding
facility that boasts a very challenging trail. A very
active local horse club seems dedicated to constant
improvement of the grounds and trails. Two large barns
have about 100 stalls. There's a large ring with stands
for spectators, a clubhouse for meetings, kitchen and
snack bar and plenty of parking for rigs. Ride manager
John Grey, Donna, Buck, the vets and radio crew were
well organized and extremely cordial.

The first 50 miles, while not exactly mountainous is far
from flat. The second loop (15mi.) took most horses
close to 3 hours to cover. The first part of the trail
included some narrow ledges that drop off sharply 30ft.
or so. They had been softened up by a torrential storm
that blew through on Friday. One horse and rider took
a slide off a ledge that gave way, but managed to get
back up and continue. The second 50 was on a recently
opened 25 mile loop that was repeated. This was flatter
and wound through farmland and a few small crossroad
towns. The rain created some boggy spots on the first
50 miles that kept the farrier working OT. Stoney lost
both hind shoes there, but Chrissie Unser and Nugget
went through four shoes before 50 miles. If anyone
finds them, we'll pay postage.

And now the weather report: hot and humid. So what else
is new in the East this Summer? Old Dominion deja vu with
slightly less heat but maybe more humidity. It's
encouraging that many riders took the conditions into
consideration and did what it takes to make it through.
21 out of 37 starters finished. Winning ride time was over
14 hours, with the majority finishing between 16 and 18
hours.

Debbie and Stoney haven't been seeing eye to eye of late,
so we coaxed a good friend, Debbie Sheets, out of a five
year endurance retirement to do the ride. Going from rider
to pit crew can be quite an adjustment in lifestyles,
but I'm pleased to say that our marriage will survive it.

At 65 miles, Stoney was running around 10th and the air was
thick enough to cut with a knife. Debbie S. held him out
for about 15min. as we cooled him out before going into the
check. After walking up a steep hill into the check, it took
another 20 min. to get down to 64. This is where Debi Gordon
and Red were eliminated as he hung at 68. After that, they
walked for three miles as darkness fell. Stoney then pepped
up as it cooled a little and rode most of the rest of the
way with a group of seven riders who all finished around
4:30 AM. CRI went from 17/18 at 65 to 15/15 at the finish.
Tough course and depending on the time of year, should make
for an interesting ROC in '97.

Up front, Danielle Kanavy was riding the incredible Cash.
She used excellent pacing, holding back some in the first
50 and pulling away on the flatter going. Also riding
her usual smart ride was Nina Warren on Desert Ballad.
They finished second, I think less than 30 minutes behind.
Here's the top ten with apologies for misspellings and
omissions:
1.) Danielle Kanavy Pieraz (Cash)
2.) Nina Warren Desert Ballad
3.) Debbie Zanot
4.) Lauretta Wazzel Brezarom
5.) Chrissie Unser Nugget
6.) Peggy Thompson Prarie Rascal
7.) Jim Rogan WJ Beezer
8.) Lois MacAfee Rhett Butler
9.) Patti Pizzo Savaq
10.)Nancy Senn Amyr Candyman

This was the final demonstration ride for the USA East team.
A decision will be reached shortly on whether or not the
NA Championships can be held next month in Flagstaff because
of the VS outbreak. The word quarantine is not one of my personal
favorites. A well attended USA East meeting was held at the
ride to discuss this and selection issues, but that's
another story.

Happy trails,

Pete LaBerge
