I don't know if it is true or not, but I was told that there were discussions on
rerouting the trail so that they did not have to cross the American River.
Apparently, the dam will not be slowed down this year due to the heavy snow
melt. The trail that was being discussed was used previously.
The other issue is the huge amount of snow up on top. The Western States 100
Run had 22 miles of snow, followed by over 100 degree temperatures in the
canyons. The run was the same sweltering hot day as the Castle Rock ride (June
24) They ended up extending the cut off time so that more people would get a
completion. In order to get the runners across the river, they had motor boats
taxi them across!
I am sure if someone has the number handy, the Western States Trail Foundation
could update the trail status. I am sure that their plans are finalized.
