It's a lot older than that. The earliest information I can find on interval
training for horses is from a n ancient manuscript written for the Kikkuli
cavalry from 1200 BC. Dr. Ann Nyland, an Arabian breeder and professor of
antiquities in Australia has translated the text and then to prove the
techniques trained a bunch of Old Colonial Arabain horses using their
techniques. In addition to the long term training there is a shorter
several day testing phase. In Dr. Nylands research horses that did not pass
the testing phase did not end up doing well. Some of the test horses have
gone on to be top Australian endurance competitors. I'm trying to get a
copy of her book here with the English translation. What I have right now
are letters and excerpts from some of the scholarly literature.
