I have been riding Kathy's very green Arab while she is laid up. You don't
know how lucky you are to have a trained horse until you get a green one.
Anyway, one approach may be to forget the canter and forget the trot and
start back at basics with the walk. Miles and miles of relaxed walking to
get the horse relaxed. Once the horse is relaxed then trot and canter can
be worked in.

I remember the old timers talking about this when I was a kid. They would
spend months on nothing but a walk. When Misty is getting too hyper, we
will go out for an easy 15 mile walk and that seems to do wonders for her
attitude.

Also if you are riding in the hills - you will be providing conditioning
even at the walk.
