pads

Packing is a very important element with the pads.  I think what you are referring to is pine tar and oakum.  You can only use pine tar and oakum with leather pads.  With plastic pads, you must use a synthetic material.  We used to use silicone but it does not fill very well and often comes out.  We now use nothing but Equi Pak. It fills the area under the pad completely and has excellent shock absorption.  With or without thrushbuster, we have never had one case of thrust with it!!  I have ridden through mud and rivers and rocks and you name it with Equi Pak without a problem!!  We use plain old black plastic pads but whatever you choose, I'd recommend Equi Pak.
