RE: [RC] [RC] riding in traffic - Laurie Durgin

I have the dirt bikers and atvs here all the time. They have to pass our pasture so the horses are used to them some. Rascal has gotten used to me getting him off the trail when they pass, that he starts to get off before I hear them and I wonder what the heck he is doing ,and usually end up apologising. But they slow or stop usually here. But there are those blind corners and some trails converge and we aren't always sure. Dirt bikers are the worst ,they are moving so fast and not noticing anything, but what they are doing, and they are young and could care less except about the speed and their stunts. The atvers tend to be older and hunter types and are more polite. Luckily 99% of the time I can get off the trailor go another way. I've had a few dog problems , but we"chase
"them and I carry mace,I haven't had to use it yet.
My biggest concern is "those under the influence" or rage types.Luckily I don't have to go on paved roads here.Laurie and Rascal

All the folks around here seem to fear riding near a heavily traveled road.
While I adamatley concur that proper training is required, and the worst can
always happen, we do not consider riding on heavily travelled roads to be of
    a serious problem.

I find far to many people feel safe when riding on a logging road, two track
or similarly other less traveled road. Around here, most of the people on
the main roads are expecting other traffic, and while ignorant of horses are
    for the most part safe.

Get out on a real back road/trail and the 4x4s (i'm one), the bikes, the 4
wheelers don't expect a horse around the next bend. Sure you know they are
comming, but the don't expect you. And on some trail there is only so far
off you can get. Every ride I manage, I fear the idiot in the woods much
more that I fear the accident on the main road.

When I was young, and slightly more stupid than now, we thought it was great
fun to tear around back trails in anything with a motor.
