[RC] Rating Horses at the start - Kathy

I also do most of my training and conditioning alone or with one other horse.
Hard to train for the start of a ride that way if you have a very competative
horse. I always started my half-saddlebred half-arabs about 20 min. behind
everyone at the start. Drove my husband crazy since he was more competative
than I am and he was the crew!! It worked with Trav, the oldest, since he
still went fast but in control. But as soon as we saw horses on the trail he
wanted to pass them. If I timed it right the vet check come soon after he
started seeing other horses on trail. With Fox, his younger brother, I found
this did not work quite as well so ended up after a few rides starting with
the pack. I usually picked out a good friend with a sensible horse to put him
behind. It helped if this was a pair I had ridden with before and they would
agree to work as my brakes, thanks Susan Casey and Charlie Brown!!! With 3000
miles on this horse I still haven't figured out how to rate him on the first
loop. I just get him in really good condition before I take him to a ride and
let him go. At age 15 he is willing to be reasonable early on in the ride
now. I can slow him down and stop him using weight ques on training rides by
myself though. When I started riding my young arabs on rides they were so
easy to rate that I ended up going too slow!! Good luck and happy trails,
    Kathy
