Prepurchase vet exams

Prepurchase vet exams can be a great money saving
thing but should not be depended on as the be-all
end-all in horse buying. I purchased an endurance
horse a few years back from a "big name" rider. I had
a prepurchase vet exam while I had the horse on trial.
This horses failed the exam due to being slightly off
when circling to the left only. Since I now loved the
horse, I had a recheck done 2 weeks later before
making my decision. The horse failed again for the
same reason. Did xrays (9 views) of the left front
leg that was causing the problem and NOTHING showed
up. Unsure of what to do, long discussions with my
husband followed and decided to take a chance and
purchase the horse anyways. The same vet that failed
the horse twice came up and gave me the biggest hug 6
months later when the horse and I finished the Old
Dominion 50 mile ride! This horse turned out to have
an old, high stone bruise that came out in subsequent
hoof trimmings months later. Had I passed I would
have missed out on the horse of a lifetime who has
never taken a lame step since! Use good horse sense
and never give up. The right horse is out there for
you!
