been sitting back (lurking) and reading post on horse behavior, conditioned response, and other training tips.i have found something useful from all these things, i belive that a person can always learn from others. either from their mistakes or their successes. i also have learned that EVERY horse is diffrent.some may seem very similar, but, still different.
had a small herd of shetland ponies, one stud, two mares with foals (foals were 3 months old) and mares bred back for the following spring. at feeding time that evening they all came running when called as usual, except the lead mare and her filly. I kept calling and started to walk through the pasture.(68 acres of mountain ,brush ,and forest )
I had just started down apath to the lower pasture, when her filly came racing up to me in full cry.She stopped, turned and ran back the way she had come, crying the whole time.every time she lost sight of me,back she came to lead me on.that little girl took me to her mother, who had left the herd to die.she had pneumonia. as it was her second bout with this ,vet over 30 miles away,we lost that mare that night. But,I'm still amazed by her filly, she stayed with her mother when the rest of the herd had left, only leaving her when she heard my call, then came for help.that was over 30 years ago and horses still continue to amaze me.
