Re: [RC] Truck talk - Laura Hayes

In answer to your questions about our semi:

We get about 13 miles to a gal of diesel. We can carry 300 gals of fuel,
which means we rarely stop for fuel, so we don't have to get off the
highways, and can just stop and unload or give the horses a break without
having to maneuver in a lot of traffic.

Maintenance can be expensive, but my husband does it himself, and there
hasn't been much maintenance except to change the oil once a year.

We decided on the big truck because my husband (who is really a vet, and
into detail and safety....) realized that most people who drive one ton
trucks in front of these big LQ trailers are OVERLOADing the trucks, and
don't even realize it. In an accident, you have a much higher chance of
rollover, or being unable to stop the trailer in time to avoid an accident.
Most people will never have to realize it, thank goodness, but just being in
that position bothered him. He looked into this for a long time, and really
put some thought to it. Most people don't weigh their rigs and have no idea
how overloaded they are. I can't tell you how many people we know who have
had new front ends, back ends and transmissions on their one tons before
they had 50K miles on them, especially in over the road situations.

It also drove him nuts to putt over the mountains of WV or wherever, and not
be able to go at a reasonable speed because the truck did not have enough
power. We live in NY, and to get to most of the rides I do (13 this year),
we are traveling long distances on highways.

Like I said, the semi is not 'cool'. It isn't fancy or very pretty (though
you can certainly get fancy and pretty ones) but it is safe and gets my
horses to where we are going with a minimum of stress and time. It cost
$13000 - try and find a pickup for that price that has 200K+ miles left in
    it.

Mark got his commercial driver's license, but it was not clear by NY law
whether he really had to since he is not using it for commerce. I know Jerry
Fruth from Indiana registers his as an RV, and does not have a CDL - his
truck is much bigger and fancier than ours. BTW, our truck is insured as an
RV, as it is not used for commercial means. If you are hauling for money,
you have all sorts of records and taxes to deal with. Goodness knows,
endurance is rarely a commercial venture!!
