To be fair, Scott, not every hunting area has an overpopulation of critters that will starve if hunters don't hunt. Plus, I'd say hunters are only a necessary part of the balance of nature when humans have screwed up the balance already and removed natural predators, who maintained a balance of nature for millions of years till the last century basically. Humans want to have a balance of nature on a daily basis, in the real natural world, the balance is maintained cyclically, that cycle taking years to go through. By not allowing natural predators to thin the cyclically high levels of prey animals, humans have interruped an ancient system that worked very well. But it would have been Bambi that most likely starved and then was killed and eaten by a predator, not Bambi's mom, unless Bambi's mom wasn't strong enough to go through these cycles.

Natural cycles make strong gene pools. Natural predators don't accidentally shoot other hunters, hikers, cyclists and equestrians or their horses, or cows, dogs, sheep, signs, etc., don't leave beer cans lying around, don't leave ATV tracks gouged out of the earth, AND they don't take the strongest and best, which in fact most human hunters try very hard to take, and which doesn't do much to help the gene pool. Tell me that human hunters are out there weeding out the weakest, the ill, the hurt, the least strong and I'll believe that hunters are a necessary part of the balance of nature.

Apologies to responsible hunters, but I'm looking at the overall picture here. I am NOT saying that humans shouldn't hunt, but am pointing out a problem I have with Scott's point of view.
