RE: [RC] Do Pastured Horses Come In Out of the Rain? - Alison Farrin

In Southern California my Arabs will rarely go into shelter to escape
the sun. Can't say the same for the quarter horses that live nearby.
I have one horse that will do anything to get out of the rain and one
who will stand in it. The one who will stand in it is, of course, gray
and as soon as the rain has washed him clean, considers it his duty to
roll in the muckiest, muddiest part of the pasture.

For the last three years I have clipped and blanketed with waterproof
blankets most of the winter. They seem to be completely happy except
when it is both windy and cold. I sometimes find them shivering under
these conditions and wish I had (will when the barn is up) a windbreak.
That's when they get a flake of alfalfa.
