RE: [RC] [Guest] Hay shed construction tips, anyone? - Snodgrass, Bonnie

Mary, if you don't have a wood floor you will loose every bale that sits on
ground or concreat to mold. An alternative is to place plastic on the
ground, sprinkle heavily with rock salt then set pallets on top of salt.
Stack your hay on the pallets. The salt will absorb moisture in the airway
under the hay. got this tip from a hay grower. This is how he stores tons of
hay in barns with out floors. Not as good as a raised wooden board floor but
    it works.

If you have an open side to your barn then you will have rain and sun coming
in. The rain is an obviouse problem but the sun bleaches the hay which cause
vitamin loss I believe. Better to have all four side enclosed.

    Hi everybody!

Any tips on hay shed construction? I'd like to build something out of wood,
a little larger than stall size. (Quickly. It is starting to rain here.)
Planning on it being three sided. Someone here is telling me to put floor
in it. I say, floor? Hmmm... Couldn't use it for an extra horse shelter,
later, if I do that. How about just ensuring good drainage around it?
Also, I'm wondering, with three solid sides and an open front, will that be
    enough ventilation?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

P.S.: Of course, this is pertinent to Endurance Net's Ride Camp because
this hay shed is to store hay for endurance horses! :-)
