That about sums up a major reason I'm a vegetarian. Yes, I miss the
steaks and prime rib I used to eat, but I've found a whole new world
of delicious vegetarian foods ... and I know there were not animals
killed to put on my plate. It's not so bad for range-raised critters,
but even they have a pretty terrible time at the end of their life.
    Ever seen a feed lot?

There was a big issue in Colorado with pig farms. They're out on the
eastern plains, keeping such large numbers of animals that disposing
of the wastes is a real problem. Pig farmers were letting it ferment
in ponds, and the smell carried to communities miles downwind. Now
they have to cover the ponds, but life is still awful for the pigs.

When the regulations were passed requiring covering the ponds some of
the farmers complained that they were just trying to make a living,
and the increased cost would put them out of business. Sorry, but I
have no sympathy for someone who "makes a living" off the suffering of
    sentient living things.
