I have pulled horses myself at Tevis twice. The first time the horse started
to thump at Devil's Thumb. I was able to stop the thumping within a minute
or two, but felt that he should not go into the next canyon in a questionable
metabolic state. I walked him to the vet check at Deadwood and took him to
the vet to check him. I told him what had happened and told him that I
wanted to pull. He examined the horse and said that he was not thumping and
looked fine. I was okay to go on if I wanted. I pulled anyway. This is a
metabolic pull regardless of the fact that the horse was okayed to go on. He
had started to thump and was metabolically stressed. This year my horse took
a fall in the Granite Chief Wilderness area. He seemed fine for a while
afterwards, but a few miles later was lame in the right hind. He had bruised
his hip in the fall. I decided to pull him and had to walk him seven miles
to the next vet check where I could pull. I went to the vet and told him I
wanted to pull because the horse was lame. The vet agreed that he was lame.
This was a lameness pull even though I had chosen to pull him before the vet
had seen him. There is no shame in pulling for a good reason. The
information gained by having accurate pull statistics is very valuable.
