    When I was racing bikes I ran into people who mooched rides, tools, food,
    floor space in motels ,etc, and never were appreciative or paid things
    back.  Worse yet, if it was someone who was a good racer, they pretty much
    felt it was owed to them to be treated like royalty.  I guess the
    inconsiderate free-loading types exist in every sport.  You did a real nice
    thing in trying to help someone out and be an ambassador for endurance
    people.  Hopefully, in the future you'll get some good karma out of it. I
    can honestly say I have met few people in my limited expereince here in OH,
    who I wouldn't be willing to help out w/a ride.  I hope your efforts don't
    dissuade you & hopefully you can discretely alert your true friend about a
    potential freeloader so they don't get burned too.
