    Colleen,
    I would highly recommend pads with EquiPak.  I can't believe a farrier would pad a horse's feet with NO packing whatsoever.  Equi Pak is THE best stuff...we have never had any thrush or anything using this stuff and we pad our share of horses, both our own and clients' horses.  If you only want to pad for a ride, use gutter guard and put the Equi Pak in and then if you like, you can remove it after a ride.  Hope this helps.
