Re getting horses to accept the syringe: The mistake I see is when
people think the job is over after they've jammed their horses' mouths
full of salt. The horse remembers the last action best, and salts
blister. So, after each dose of electrolytes, I fill the syringe with
water and use it to rinse my horse's mouth and wash her lips, usually
about 10 shots of water to finish the job. Other times, she gets a shot
of plain old applesauce - unsweetened and diluted a bit to get it
through the opening. This horse looks forward to the syringe because she
has never been left with a bad taste in her mouth.
