      When I was a kid, a common trick to get a horse to take the bit
    more easily was to put jam on the Bit.  Since your guy is food-
    oriented, You might try first putting something tasty on the syringe (jam, molasses, etc) and let him lick it off.  After he
    gets used to that, try also putting the tasty-treat IN the syringe, and as he is licking it off, squirt some into his mouth.  Once he is used to that, eliminate putting it on the outside.  Try varying the substance (apple-sauce, strained-carrots ala Gerbers, etc) so he does not know what to expect.
