Re: [RC] [RC] Trail Marking using paint - Nancy Mitts

We're not allowed to use any type of paint (even the temporary chalk type) on Missouri Conservation department run lands. We used to, with no problem from the forester,(on the ground, not the trees) until a nearby landowner complained to the game warden. Game wardon issued a ticket, which the club was able to get thrown out with the help of a horse friendly lawyer. Of course, for the first time ever there had not been a huge storm after the ride to wash the paint away. I was on the crew that went out with spray bottles of water & wire brushes to get it off (the gravel roads!), not fun at all. Anything that might cause complaints & controversy for the dept. is not allowed. Also, any signage must be tied to trees, absolutely no nails, tacks or staples. We have a limited number of days to get the markers down (sometimes, before we leave the area.) Yet, the boy scouts have events in the woods & leave their stuff up forever. Go figure. When I got my permit for the Turkey Trot this year I asked if it was okay to use the trail past the shooting range. "What shooting range, he asked?" Well, the one ribboned off with "Keep Out" signs from the Boy Scout Council & MO Dept of Conservation. "Oh, that was just a temporary thing."
Most of the other riders are considerate of leaving markers up. but it only takes one to ruin a ride! A big poblem is the people with kids who think it's fun to decorate their horse with the pretty colored ribbons!
