[RC] SPLINT SURGICALLY REMOVED - Rides 2 Far

One of my old endurance horses fell and shattered his rear splint (never
knew they even had one till then). Had it surgically removed because
chips were coming out the hole. I have the surgery on video. Pretty
scarey seeing your horse come in suspended from an overhead track hanging
upside down by his hobbled feet. (I could just imagine what all was
being pulled in the ankle area).

The surgery went well. He had to stay in the stall a couple of months it
seemed like. I have a picture of him with a blue ribbon hanging from his
bridle and the IV area was still shaved on his throat. He'd just won a
hunt seat class. He never went back to endurance...because he was always
getting pulled *before* he shattered the splint and I'd decided to get a
new horse. He went on to make a nice pony club type horse with no
    problems.

My neighbor's endurance horse had a front splint that had loose chips
that didn't heal. It was a big splint causing vague lameness and they
did surgery. I thought it would be nice for that great big splint to be
gone. Guess what...it was much bigger *after* surgery. Something about
them scraping the bone or whatever made it lay down *more* bone. He's
done plenty of 50's since then but really needs splint boots to keep from
hitting that ping pong ball on his leg.
