Debby, Yes, that works very well. That is one of the first things Buck had us work on in the colt starting class. I guess that is why after working with my colt on trailer loading AND on having him walk by, that I was able to load him so nicely when leaving the clinic. Probably the best thing I learned at the clinic as a whole was ground work, ground work, ground work. Then if things aren't going well in the saddle, go back to ground work. I have used Parelli Natural Horsemanship groundwork techniques especially the "squeeze" game, sending the horse between you and a fence, each time closer; sending the horse through narrow gates, backing the horse through gates. Get the horse used to going where you send him on line before trying to load in a trailer. Parelli has good videos including a trailer loading video.
