[RC] Charles - volunteering - Ridecamp Guest

Charles, don't go out there like a babe in the woods. Having volunteered at several rides, I can tell you that your likely to be sent to the boonies to man a gate or some other mindless chore. You'll be stuck out there for a minimum of 10 hours baking in the sun. While I have done some rides where the management doesn't forget your out there and they send water, food, someone to talk to, I have also just been left out there to die (ha, ha) of dehydration/starvation. Not sure why management doesn't rotate this type of position. Unless your a friend of management it is like to impossible to get the job of scribe or timekeeper. That's because these jobs are where the action is (read fun and educational) and your close to bathroom facilities, food, water, etc. Fight for them is right! I've made myself available weeks before rides to mark trail, unmark trail, drag ride, let them know I'd love to scribe, to no avail. Seems to me, from the outside looking in, that the fun jobs are given to friends. Might not be the case, but seems like it to me. I'm to the point that I won't volunteer again. I know mangement is busy, but this last ride was a deal breaker for me. I'd rather go ride my horse. You'd be better off hanging around camp and crewing for whoever needs you. The riders are really happy to get the help.
