[RC] How much hay will I need? - Ridecamp Guest

    Steven Hurd hurdnet@xxxxxxxxxxxx
I have recently become involved with horses though my wife and teenage son. As partial payment for lessons and training at a small stable started by a good friend I have agreed to provide the hay for our two horses as well as the instructors two. I am a Dairy Farmer so have the land and equipment for dry hay. My son and I have already stored 240 bales of late 1st cut(12%protein)and 140 bales of 19% protein 2nd(bales average 40lbs)at the stable. Horses are out on pasture till snow which here in Vermont could be November. My question is how much hay are two 20+yo lesson horses and two off the track Thoroughbreds all 15.2 hands or better likely to eat? I have more hay here that can be moved. Is the second cut too good to feed exclusively? This also got me wondering if horses can eat Haylage? We put up 2000 tons of the stuff every year for the cows and it sure is less work and less weather dependent than dry hay. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on equine feed requirements, any help from this list would be appreciated...now if you have any bovine questions send them my way!!
