[RC] CTR Lazy Horse Trot Out - Carolyn Burgess

Hi. I can sympathize with your friend. My horse is very lazy at the trot out. Lazy both before and after the ride. You didn't say that the horse was lazy before though, but I would guess that he is. I get points off because of this too, but my guy is getting better at this. And he is always the same before and after. I bring in a whip, a BIG whip, both before and after. I usually don't have to touch him with the whip. I actively use it both before and after the ride, and I either wave it behind him, about dock of the tail high, or tap the ground behind him, to keep him moving. If he is being really lazy, I tap him with the whip between his bum and his hocks. Sometimes I will even get a nice buck, which really helps with the judges.

The key is though to do this on a longe line. First, it makes a really nice circle that the judge can see, and second, you don't look like an idiot trying to drag him all over the place. You also need to consider this part of the training routine and she needs to trot him out regularly, so he gets used to it.

    Carolyn Burgess
