But, sometimes the person can be knowledgeable about horses and still be
afraid of that particular animal for their own reasons. I had a horrible
accident with an Appaloosa mare in an arena. She stumbled on a dip in the
footing and fell part way down. On her way back up, she lurched to one side
and hit the arena fence. My boot caught in the fence, and then mare leapt
forward with my boot now pinned in the stirrup and the fence. I slipped a
disk and tore my glut almost completely in two. I couldn't walk for two
weeks and never could get to the point where I could ride that mare without
breaking into a sweat from fear. The fear, combined with a basic personality
conflict with the mare, made me sell the mare. I explained my issues with
the mare to the potential buyer who bought her anyway and adores her. They
both like to work in the arena and just kind of mosey along the trail every
once in a great while. I bought a different mare, who is quite a bit more
spirited than the Appaloosa mare, but I adore her and don't have the same
fear issues with her. Sometimes, part of the problem is a personality
conflict between the horse and the rider, and not a lack of knowledge.
