I've been a tad sheltered from all this media hype since I don't have TV
and hadn't been listening to the radio this summer. As a teacher I was
off work and to tell the truth the only mention I'd heard of WNV was on
Ridecamp. With school starting back up I'm back in the loop and was
absolutely AMAZED at the coverage! It reminds me of when the weather
here in the Southeast drops below freezing and the media comes on to
explain to us how coats work. "And our guest today is Professor Hubert
Smedley from the institute of temperature research to demonstrate how to
properly apply a scarf"....
*Honestly* what...7 people have died? How many old people died of the
flu last year? I'll bet more people have choked on peanut butter
sandwiches and killed over this summer.
Face it. We've got a zillion 24 hour news agencies who have to fill time.
I just wish I'd bought stock in DEET before they started this up. But
that's O.K. because once the frost hits the TV stations will start a
scare on overexposure to DEET and how many people who applied it are now
coming down with...FLU... now that it's December!
I got my horses innoculated because their odds are much worse if they
get sick, but I've yet to put on any bug spray.
P.S. Many people have compared this to the media frenzy over shark
attacks last summer. I wish the media would mention that more people are
killed by Hogs than sharks in America each year. THAT scare would be
entertaining. (it's true)
