[RC] Use the hills - April Johnson

This reminds me of how I learned to post. I was training my Appaloosa for endurance. Doing the LSD thang. Bareback, of course (our two LDs together were bareback). I had no idea how to post. I started doing it on the steeper uphills to keep me from sliding back too far. Then one of my friends went riding with me and said, "hey, you're posting!! When did you start doing that?" I didn't have a clue that I was posting. It was just a way to stay on my horse.

On an uphill is where I taught that same horse to canter. When I got him, he was very weak in the back end and never cantered. Even in the pasture. After two months of walk, trot, and backing up exercises in a makeshift arena, I took him out and taught him to canter on a pretty steep uphill.

    Man, I miss that horse.

I always found that the easiest way to learn to canter bareback, or teach someone to do so, is to canter on a straightaway, up a slight hill.....
