    My old Appalachian Singlefooter would be scooting along at the singlefoot
    (low-action gait) and when asked to canter, would sort of lift herself up in
    the air and collect all of her legs up under herself, then put three of them
    back down for a three-legged stride, carrying the fourth leg, then she would
    go nicely into a canter.
    
    It felt smooth to ride, but looked really wild from the ground. She
    completed a couple of LD rides with no problem.  I seem to recall her TWH
    mother did it, too, but I was really young when she was alive.
