Boy, Amanda, that is a tuffy. Better let Truman answer that one. My TWH
loves to canter, and he has the most lovely Rocking Chair Canter. It is
just a dream to ride.
Rule of thumb is that you do not let them go into a canter until they
are WELL set in their RW. Cruiser loves to cantor so much that I
cheated and let him do it, but it did at first and for a long time ruin
his RW. He would do something like a RW in the rear end and a Cantor in
the Front end.
He is well set enough now that I can just cluck or tap with a crop and
he will go from a RW into a cantor and not get mixed up. However, I have
never had him start from a Dog walk to a cantor. I still try not to let
him cantor too much, Just because I want him to Rack now without breaking
out of that.
Do you have a TWH? If you go to either Liz Graves or Lee Ziegler's
website they explain all the different gaits and how to get them into
them. Go to Gaited Horses.com that should take you there.

Now I have a question for those out here who ride gaited horses: how to
teach a TWH to cue to a canter from a walk and NOT to counter-canter/cross
leads?
