Not all of us have access to the kind of terrain we expect to compete in for
training rides. It would hardly be fair to expect a horse to compete in
rocky areas if you only had access to sandy ground for training. Terrain
within a 4-6 hour drive of me varies considerably, and I certainly don't have
the option of conditioning in the area where a ride will be held. I have to
condition in the terrain I have available, if my horse's feet or not
conditioned to rocks, then I have to provide additional protection. The
alternative is to NOT compete. And I hope nobody is advocating that!
