    [RC] Wolverine - Larry Miller

Just wanted all to know that Maggie Mieske managed her first ride, the
toughest in the state of MI. It is true that she did not have to worry
about the trails as Jim Yell marked them and does an excellent job. I would
say that for the first time RM who was a nervous wreck that she did just
great. The awards that her youngest daughter made were beautiful and her
oldest daughter handled the book work like a pro. Of course they all
learned something, but who is ever perfect on the first ride that one puts
on.? I get pretty angry at folks who come up during the ride and start
telling the new RM and old ones too, what should or should not be done. We
are so lucky that someone is willing to put on a ride. We should be kissing
and hugging our ride managers cause if they did not go thru all the grief
that comes along with putting on a ride, we all would not be riding.
Maggie's awards were different, fun, and nice. She had funny awards too and
everyone had a good time with those. We had a fun raffle to support her
trail clinic in the spring so I hope she made some money there. Nelson was
a peach but Nelson, you gave Maggie flowers cause she never yelled at you
(which is her right as a wife) but you did yell at her!! LOL. She can't be
two places at once you know but you kept your cool too and I am proud of you
all. One junior's horses had colic on Sunday and Nelson was right on top of
that too along with other concerned folks. I am not sure that this neat
little horse is out of the woods yet, but he sure got good care at camp as
we all were very concerned about him. The trail was tough from all the rain
and washouts, but it was doable and still is one of the prettiest trails in
MI. I do think that riders need to remember to get their horses in shape.
One can't take a horse to a tough trail with little conditioning and expect
to do miracles. Horse homework is important. Our vets were wonderful and
on top of things. Adding up points at the end is tough when tired. So
mistakes are made but the rider can catch them and no big deal. I do know
that most of us had a wonderful time and it was due to Maggie's and Nelson's
expertise and courtesy. Jenny and Carrie were great and it is probably the
only ride that had at least 8 corgies running around!!! Thank you guys for
a great time cause fun is the name of the game. Doing well is icing on the
cake. Finishing with a sound horse after a tough trail is winning in my
eyes. I do know that when Maggie got her Malik home, he hurt himself and
probably won't be back on trail this year. I am sorry Maggie, but then on
the other hand, you can go and help on other rides and figure out what you
want to do for improvement next year!!! (Tongue in cheek) I hope you all
had enough positive experiences that we will see you managing this ride
again for 2003. Thank you very much Maggie and all. You did an excellent
job for your first time. I hope now you can get caught up on your sleep.
    Jeanie Miller
