Try putting the stethoscope far under the elbow.  Yes, some horses have fainter heartbeats than others.  And no, a quieter heartbeat doesn't necessarily mean a lower resting rate.

    HI,

I was wondering if anyone else runs into this - I find I have such difficulty in hearing some horses' hearts with a stethoscope. For some horses, you can hear their hearts loud and clear and for others I have to fidget with the stethoscope, moving it around, for what seems like forever, trying to hear something. Do you think its the place I'm putting the stethoscope or is it because some horses do not have very loud heart beats? Would a very quiet heart beat mean a low resting heart rate?
