My husband went out to L.L. Bean last night and bought topopgraphical mapping software marketed by Nat'l Geographic called "Topo!". It gives fairly detailed topo maps (shows all houses, for instance) of the region. One cool feature is that you can trace out a route and it will tell you the total miles, and it can generate coordinates that can be downloaded to a GPS. I plan to enter in all my faviorite riding trails so I can see what the distances are. It won't be exact, since the trails don't show on the map so I'll have to estimate their locations, but it will provide a better guestimate than I currently have.
We bought it for checking our real estate: when a realtor send s a lsting, we can find it ont he map as see the lay of the land and how many other hourses are in the area.
