[RC] Arabs are No. 1 (Have to brag) - Kristene Smuts

    Hi guys

I have to tell you about another good thing about Arabs I saw yesterday (don't want to rehash the old topic, but it was too good not to share). I trucked a friend to a dressage show which was held at the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA) school grounds. Some disabled riders competed in the various classes against able bodied riders. Most able bodied riders were on TBs or Warmbloods and of those in the classes I watched, most horses acted up - spooking, prancing, galloped into the arena (my friend). BUT, there were two disabled riders on Arabs, both fillies, who did extremely well. The one filly was a bit hollow backed, but she went through her paces as asked. The other filly caused me to get tears in my eyes. Although she went down the one long side with a beady eye on the flower pots, she didn't spook once, was calm and collected in mind and body, and gave her all to her rider. Yes, I thought, must have been doing this for a while! The rider had a wonderfully quiet seat (better than mine in the arena) and very soft hands.

When they finished and saluted, I burst into applause (together with his entire family and friends) which made his chest swell even more. When he came out, I congratulated him and he said that it was his AND her first time in a test - they were riding the ELEMENTARY test as well! I couldn't stop smiling and felt so proud - for both the rider and horse.

My friend was a bit miffy when I mentioned (several times) this fellow and Ayrab doing better than her very schooled TB!

    Have a good day
    Kristene
