Personally, I think the decision made by the board was pure politics and the real problem,  was not Potato, but the way the ride start was set up on the narrow dark road.

Hi Carol, your description of the ride start is pretty accurate.  Except for the fact that the great majority of the horses are waiting quietly.  Having someone ram their horse through the crowd definitely disrupts the horses who are just trying to be good and wait "GO".  I know of a couple of riders who were trying to get up to the red shirt who got stopped fairly close to where I was waiting.  When they were told that they simply couldn't go any farther, they accepted that and settle down to wait.  Then, along came Potato.   He yelled for everybody to get out of his way, yelled at his wife to "heel" (like a dog for Pete's sake -- my husband would have to sleep with one eye open for the rest of his very short life if he ever spoke to me like that).  And when told that there was simply no way to proceed further he yelled "Bullshit" and plowed on through.  Obviously he made it to the front.  The fact that he had equipment problems in the a.m. doesn't really explain his tardiness (als o, he should get his stories straight on WHICH equipment was stolen).  This is his normal M.O. He heads for the start when he's good and ready and everybody else be damned. HE DOES THIS EVERY YEAR.  The rest of us who want to get a good spot (not in front for me, but not way back) leave our trailers at 4:30ish so we can get where we want without a problem.  It was pretty close to 5 a.m. (maybe after) when Potato pushed past me.

Like I said, Potato does this every year I just think he shoved the wrong people this time and they stood up and said "We're mad as Hell and we're not gonna take it anymore" (I love that movie <g>).
