[RC] sick riders at Tevis - Cindi Hein

How come there were so many pulled sick riders this year?? What was the weather like?
Anyone know what the illnesses were - dehydration or???
That is my biggest problem in this sport is keeping hydrated and stomach happy. I found that if I have just water on board - it will not get drunk. I take along watered down tea or something that has flavor, but, not overly sweet.
In fact lately on my training rides, I have no problem drinking down my water bottles with some sort of flavored item in them and I freeze them the night before so they stay cold throughout my rides. I now come home with no headache and I actually feel good! What a novelty.
But, when it comes time for my horse to go to Tevis (and I plan to) I'm worried about staying healthy.
The last time I was at Tevis, I got so sick at about mile 70. I couldn't eat anything or drink. I have no idea how I made it through!
I felt better when I was on the horse trotting. Everytime I got off or came into a vet check, I thought I would start heaving.
I remember being at the Quarry and the vets told me to just take some time and put my head between my legs and maybe think about pulling.
I told them - I feel better when I'm on and trotting. The horse was doing great - I was a different story. I climbed back on and continued.
But, I don't want to get like that again at a ride like that - it's miserable! And I was not a full partner for my horse either.
I think the trick is is to not allow your system to shut down in the first place. Back then I knew nothing about Gu. And Carbo powder in the water bottles.
I don't know -- I'm still trying to come up with things.
But, it would be helpful to find out about the Tevis illness pulls and see what can be improved.
    Cindi
