[RC] WNV, Transport and PG Mares ?? - SandyDSA

I would like some input from those of you who routinely travel with your horses from state to state. First of all, our new colt is supposed to arrive by the end of the month, He came down with Pigeon Fever about 2 weeks ago and is coming out of it well. He is in Texas right now, and because West Nile has now been found THERE, I am trying to choose wisely - when to actually transport Makhx in. We have a mare due to foal in less than a month, in addition to my 27 year old mare, and finally, the effects of travel on a horse in recovery from Strangles. I want to hear from youguys, particularly those who have had horses shipped from Texas, and also Heidi, etc., the effects of both the WNV vaccine as well as exposure - and timing - of both WNV and Pigeon Fever on pregnant mares and older horses.  I don't want to jeopardize the health of either my horses here or of Makhx - who is just 16 months old. We plan to train him on his first handful of mares late next spring - and don't want to compromise either his health or development. He is a pretty big, stout and solid boy - but that may not matter with these diseases. Aside from the sentimental, he is a rather valuable straight Makhsous son - not easy to find, and right now not replaceable. So....I don't want to take any chances. I had thought to wait until the VERY end of the month or the first week of August to ship him - and he will now pasture at a client's place in Agua Dulce for  the remainder of the year - but they have 2 PG mares as well. So what is the safety margin here - to PG mares, old horses, competing horses, and himself? As excited as I am to get him here, I awnt to do what is best for him too.
