Re: [RC] ***Nurse Mare needed for orphaned foals, Walnut Creek, Ca*** - Maggie & David

If you don't find a nurse mare, orphans are a joy to raise. And what a great
bond to have with a horse as they go into their early training.

My Lucky is four now. He came to me at four days old in the dead of winter,
a month premature. He lived in my laundry room for a month. He, too,
couldn't get up on his own for most of that time. He was severely
dehydrated, and hypothermic when he moved in. He was completely blind for
the first few days as his eyeballs had sunk into his skull from dehydration.
    He shouldn't have lived.

But he did, thanks to a few good friends, like the out of state ride vet who
offered free advice at all hours when I couldn't get a local vet to come to
see him. And the members of the local rescue squad who donated IV supplies
for him. And the local urgent care center who donated vials of dextrose for
him. And the feed store that made sure they always had plenty of goat milk
replacer in stock. (much cheaper than foal lac)

When he got strong enough to move to the barn, he was buddied up with a
kindly gelding that became his best friend until his little sister was born
a year later. It was so funny to have the neighbors comment on our new baby
and what a lovely mare! He grew up as a horse instead of a spoiled brat.
Well he might be just a little spoiled......

Now that he is old enough to start his education, there is very little
'training' involved. We show him something and we're done. He was doing our
6 mile training loop his fourth time under saddle because there wasn't much
new to teach him in the arena. When he is scared, he hides behind me if I am
on the ground and looks for me if I am on him. He should make an awesome
endurance horse as he was going camping and following us on trail since he
    was six months old.

Best of luck with your babies, and my deepest sympathies in the loss of your
    mare,
